Take a look at the colours & characters of Charlton’s successful League One Play-Off Final win

Sometimes the League One Play-Off Final, sandwiched between the curtain-raising League Two Play-Off Final and the notoriously named £170m game in the form of the Championship Play-Off Final, can get a little bit lost in the excitement of the entire weekend. Not this year, though. When Charlton Athletic faced Sunderland at Wembley, on the 26th May 2019, the game started unpredictably and ended, well, even more unbelievably.

After Mouhamadou Naby-Sarr slotted a heavy and amateurishly placed back-pass past Dillon Phillips in goal, Charlton fans would have been forgiven into thinking Sunderland would avenge their defeat in the Play-Off Final between the pair back in 1998. But following a Ben Purrington equaliser, the game was emphatically settled by Addicks’ centre-half Patrick Bauer with literally the last kick off the game.

When it comes to any Wembley fixture you regularly see Wembley Way awash with a sea of fans ahead of the game and the rat race of the losing team heading to the Tube early afterwards. We know you’ve seen that all before. So, that’s why we despatched Arthur Comely to capture the build-up in and amongst the Charlton fans off the beaten track. Beyond the usual haunts and away from the normal outposts to capture the thoughts, feelings and expressions of fans that you so often don’t see.

In doing so, Arthur has sewn together a canvas of incredible faces who will always remember the day that the South London club made the climb out of League 1 at the tenth time of asking.

Take a closer look at the day in the image gallery above and be sure to follow Arthur Comely on Instagram for more incredible portrait photography.
