Inspired by the region’s sailing boats & complete with air conditioning…

The Al Wakrah Stadium, designed by Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, has hosted its first game – the Amir Cup final between Al-Duhail and Al Sadd.

One of eight venues that will host games during the FIFA World Cup 2022, the 40,000-seat stadium was designed by Hadid before she passed away. It has been built so that it can be used during Qatar’s hot summer months with the inclusion of an openable roof and a seating-bowl cooling system to allow football to be played all-year round.

The architecture studio designed Al Wakrah Stadium to have a unique form, which would stand out compared to the numerous “generic” venues that are being built around the world.

Located on the coast, ZHA took design inspiration from the dhow, the traditional sailing vessels in the region, as well as the area’s storied culture.

The retractable roof reimagines the hulls of the boat, providing shade and beams that mimic its structures, with unique textures borrowed from traditional Arabic motifs.

Built to seat up to 40,000 people, the design could be modified to fit 20,000 in its legacy mode and will become home to the Al Wakrah Sport Club professional football team of the Qatar Stars national league after the World Cup.
